Anybody who knows how to build muscle strength will tell you that there are certain elements to building muscle strength that do not necessarily include exercise.

Many people believe that the more often you work out, the stronger you will become, but this isn't necessarily the case.

If you want to know how to build strength, the following guidelines will get you started:

1. Around two hours before you exercise eat a combination of carbohydrates and protein. Protein of course is essential for muscle growth, however the carbohydrates will provide you with additional energy to help you work harder during a workout.

2. Immediately after your workout it is important to consume a post workout meal that is high in protein and carbohydrates in the form of natural sugars. This meal is probably the most important meal of the day as it is essential to repairing and growing your muscles, which are important for strength. The sugar is essential because it produces an insulin spike which in turn generates significant muscle growth.

3. It is important to do the correct exercises in order to strengthen your muscles. Certain exercises exercise specific muscles, so depending on the muscle you want to strengthen, you will need to do an exercise to suit. It is important to work your muscles as hard as you can during your workouts.

4. You don't necessarily have to use weights in order to strengthen your muscles. For example, if you want to strengthen your chest, you can do push-ups. Alternatively, if you want to strengthen your biceps you could do pull-ups, or you could do squats to strengthen your leg muscles, and so on.

5. Supersets are an ideal way to build muscle strength. Supersets involve switching between exercises and alternating them 2 to 3 times, with very little break in between. In fact, a study in the US found that men who took a break for 30 seconds between sets gained 6% more strength than those who took a break of 90 seconds.

6. Do not overtrain. Overtraining can actually cause muscle injury, because in order to repair and grow a muscle needs sufficient rest. Injuring a muscle will significantly reduce its strength and you will not be able to use that muscle again until it repairs properly.

7. As you get used to each exercise you can gradually start to increase the weight you use. It is important that the weight is not too heavy because you must perform the exercise correctly. Lifting a weight that is too heavy for you can cause injury.

8. Finally, in order to build strength and to help your muscles grow, you need to maintain a diet that helps to promote good health and muscle growth. This diet will include fresh whole foods that are high in protein, fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

As you can see, knowing how to build strength the correct way is essential to prevent injury. Also, allowing your body plenty of rest will promote muscle growth which will in turn help to build your strength even further.
